Burning rice husks to make fertilizer in Isaan

The process is more correctly called pyrolysis. The burning of organic substances leaving a solid residue richer in carbon content. This is basically the way charcoal is made and in Isaan the product is know as khao glaam and is used as an additive or fertilizer for the clay like soil in the region. The thing that interests me is that this is the time of year and when fish are being caught everywhere and I would think using the smoke from these fires to smoke fish, to preserve them would provide even more value to the dirty work. There are 2 of these villages nearly side by side with a couple hundred "houses" in each. As usual you can view the location in the Picasa Web Album
